Then, What is a Switched PDU?

Posted by Kayla Poole on Nov 19, 2018 10:55:26 AM

In our previous post “So, What Is an Intelligent PDU?”  we provided some clarification to what can be thought of as a broad a category of products, all of which have a network connection in common.  An intelligent PDU is a basic PDU with a network connection.  And like most general categories, there are subcategories that bear some discussion.

So, What Is an Intelligent PDU?

Posted by RJ Tee on Nov 19, 2018 10:54:10 AM

The term ‘intelligent PDU’ has become so ubiquitous, the definition is no longer clear.  Not surprising, “What is an intelligent PDU?” is one of the most common questions we get from our readers.  Terms like ‘network power strip’ and ‘IP power strip’ get bandied about, but they somehow fail to capture the essence of choosing and using an intelligent unit.

Need a Crystal Ball to Predict your Future Rack Power Requirements?

Posted by RJ Tee on Nov 9, 2018 10:06:16 AM

Are you faced with the challenge of selecting a rack PDU to meet not only your existing but also future power needs? Whether it’s for a refurbishment, new build, or retro-fit, when making such a purchase, you need to ensure you are maximizing your investment for the long-term - yes? But how does a data center manager feel secure in the knowledge that he has all potential future requirements covered? Short of gazing into a crystal ball and asking for some otherworldly guidance, there has been no simple answer to the question, ‘what will my future power needs be?’…until now.

Halloween, Part 11?

Posted by RJ Tee on Oct 31, 2018 1:08:52 PM

If you’re Laurie Strode, Halloween isn’t exactly happy with Michael Myers creeping around – it’s more like a day of reckoning. What’s worse, poor Ms. Strode has had to wait around 40 years for a chance at revenge - and a decent sequel. At Server Technology, we are committed to not having you wait that long to get what you want.

[Pt. 3] New Hardware in the Data Center

Posted by RJ Tee on Oct 26, 2018 1:23:17 PM

One of the identified macro trends for the data center market is the never-ending progression of new hardware technologies. Where “density” used to mean a 42U rack full of 1U servers, today’s hyperscale, hyper dense data centers may have tens, hundreds, or even thousands of nodes and cores within a single rack (or even single RU in some instances). In addition, SSDs, networking fabric, GPU processing cards, specialty FPGA and ASIC chips for AI applications are all being added at a rapid clip to the already complex stack found in most data centers.

[Pt.1] Hyper Growth, Hyperscale, and Hyper Density in the Data Center

Posted by RJ Tee on Oct 10, 2018 12:56:00 PM

How to keep up with the need to build out multiple data centers a day? Edge and cloud computing players such as Vapor IO are finding themselves with a daunting task – figuring out how to roll out 40,000 data centers at cell tower locations around North America. Partnering with fast, flexible suppliers offering short lead times and high production capacity is a key enabler for widespread micro/edge data centers as well as building hyperscale data centers.
